What is an ITIN Number?

ITIN Number Renewal
An ITIN number that has not been used on a tax return for five consecutive years will become expired, and will need to be renewed before it can be used again. In addition, starting from the 1st of january 2021, the IRS is implementing a new policy where ITINs will expire after 9 years of non-use, and individuals will need to renew it before they can file their taxes. This means that if you haven't used your ITIN number on a tax return in the past five (or 9) years, you'll need to renew it before you can file your taxes again. The renewal process is similar to the initial application process, but there are a few additional requirements you'll need to meet.
To renew an ITIN number, you will need to submit the following documents:
- A completed Form W-7
- Proof of identity, such as a passport or national identification card
- Proof of foreign status, such as a visa or resident alien card
- Original or certified copies of any expired ITIN documentation
- A tax return, if you're required to file one and if you have used the ITIN before
